I want to do more adventure stories, because this was really fun to write. I've been wanting to build something around grave robbers for a while, but couldn't figure out the right angle. Happy with where I landed.
This is spooky, but not funny. Hopefully that isn't upsetting for you.
A few things I'm obsessed with - maladaptive daydreaming, pirates, and The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire. Not sure if it was a good idea to put them all together in the same story, but that's what I've done.
Is anyone reading these? Am I merely entertaining myself? I can't tell. I'm supposed to be working on my novel right now, but instead I thought, "Hey, why don't I write descriptions for that random list on Medium. That seems like a better use of my time." Weird that I somehow manage to get things done. This should be encouraging for you, because if I can get things done, you can DEFINITELY get things done. What was I saying? Oh, yes. This is a story about a modern quest. It has magic and stuff, but weird dream magic. I really like what I tried to do here. Do I like what I actually did? Jury is still out. Honestly, I'd like to take some time and convert this into a novella, because there are good bones, but they need more space to spread out and become. Great, another project.
Heh, I'm devilishly proud of this one. Don't want to give anything away, so read it if you want.
Probably the most experimental I've gotten. If you've read the short story by Joyce Carol Oates, "Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?" — that was kind of where I started. Also inspired by being an older sister and... I guess... religion. Ugh, that sounds so serious. You're not going to read it now, are you?
Short. Sweet. Weird. 👍
Meh. It's a story. Maybe I don't love this one. I think I can do better.
Disclaimer - for legal reasons I must inform you that the character in this story is not based on any of my bosses.
I've long been fascinated by the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice and wanted to put my own spin on the tale. Here I imagine them as Generation Z lovers - brave, silly, and still very much doomed.
I read a collection of Lovecraft stories prior to writing this piece. I'd never actually read any Lovecraft before, so I had a lot of weird emotions about the experience. This story was my chance to play with a number of the themes he used in his work and, yes, poke fun.
